Girls Night In

I had the biggest TV day today, and even though the total time count that I slobbed it up in bed for was kind of gross, I loved every second of it. A few Mad Men's, a couple Archers, Chronicle, SNL, and a documentary called "Miss Representation." When I finish a semester, I need a few weeks off of things to do with my schooling. Even though I'm excited to read for pleasure I need a break from reading, I don't want to watch things that have to do with my degree, etc. As I downloaded this documentary I realized that my "forget everything I learned this semester" phase must be up. It made me happy that I am minoring in Gender Studies, confirming that what I'm learning is actually important and relevant.

Miss Representation is about the negative portrayal of women in the media and how they are under-represented. Some of the clips were absolutely shocking, especially the little montage of news stories and the disgustingly misogynist ways that the male news casters talked about women. Politics are politics and you can have opinions on whatever politicians and political parties you like, (hey, let's say "politics" some more!) but seeing how Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin are treated simply because they are women was disgusting and gave me a new respect for all the bullshit they've had to go through.

I highly recommend watching this documentary! It has commentary from Gloria Steinem, Geena Davis, Rosario Dawson, Condoleeza Rice and Margaret Cho among others. I fear having kids in this crazy ol' day and age, especially a daughter. But I think that Miss Representation is the start of something very helpful for young ladies out there!
