Poliça

I heard Gayngs for the first time last summer.  It was my last day in Victoria and Stacy picked me up from my summer home/couch at Jolene and Corey's. We bought a buttload of booze, and hung out on Alison's famous green couch listening to music.  Not only do they have one million band members, but Gayngs are sexy. Which now, when I think back maybe there was an ulterior motive putting them on. Y'know, like putting on Barry White or Al Green. Check out their Philosopher Kings cover. Ooh baby!

Gayngs man, Ryan Olson recently produced the debut album Give You The Ghost for Poliça.  This album is quickly growing on me.  Bon Iver has even praised them to Rolling Stone, "I've been listening to this band Polica from Minneapolis a lot lately, they're the best band I've ever heard." Lead singer Channy Leaneagh sings with auto-tune.  So now I need to expand my auto-tune allowed list.  Kanye West, Bon Iver, James Blake, and now, Poliça.  This music is sesssssy, it makes you shimmy yer shoulders and wag yer butt around.  The song "Form" has the (pardon my lame-guage) grooviest bass on the album making this song my current favorite.  But I feel like this is one of the albums where your favorite song changes until you've loved each one "the best."

Check out "Form" below:

This is Poliça's official video for "Amongster."

This is the album cover, which I think is fuckin' rad. The font reminds me of the movie "Drive" and the 80's scrawl looks so good in contrast to the calm, pretty and slightly creepy photo.
Aaand just cause I want to, check out this awesome live video of them performing "Wandering Star" on The Current. Yey dual drummers!

Victoria

MEMBER???

Member my first post when I was all, "I can't wait for this album to come out?"  Member?  Well it's happening.  Here's the first video from the album with TV on the Radio!  It sounds like summer and patio's and fruit flavored beers.  Just under 3 weeks until the album comes out!

Rude Boys

This new video from Odd Future is fun, and the official comeback of Earl Sweatshirt, who has been "missing" aka in a military school in Samoa.  OFWGKTA are on a photo set, and you can see glimpses of famous fashion photog Terry Richardson trying to take pictures of the boys, which you can probably tell from the video would be a difficult task. (Head over to Terry's website, ladies, he just uploaded some new ones of James Franco, taday)  This video is of the group plus several of their friends horsing around with tons of props and having spontaneous fun.  Frank Ocean is in the background, and he seems a little more mature than the rest of his friends.. I was concerned that he would just be in the back, nonchalantly sippin on his drink like the dad of the group, but he comes in and lays down a sweet bit, rapping instead of his usual croon.  I've never listened to Mike G's solo albums, nor did I really know that he was Warren G's cousin, or that he even existed.  However his part in "Oldie" is one of my favorites!  He's got that smooth southerny drawl that is always amazing in rap.  Plus he's got a grill.  Earl Sweatshirt (one of my favorite names in the game) has his reunion with the group in this video.  He's one of the stars of the video, laughing up a storm and having a great time, and you can tell that his friends are happy to have their little guy back.
I saw an interview the other day with Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and non-rapping buddy Taco.  Most of these kids are under 21, except for my Frank Ocean who is slightly older at 24.  Which leads me to ask, why, when these little shits go solo, their lyrics are so dark, scary, weird, sexual and way too rapey?  They're too young to know about any of those things!  I think they're super talented, have great voices, great "flow"... and I really like Earl Sweatshirts 'tourist dad' outfits.  Rap is known for its misogynist lyrics but I can't actually listen to most of their solo music cause it either freaks me out, grosses me out, or is just against my lady morals.  I think that they should just stick together as a group, and make non-disgusting songs and videos just like this one.

OFWGKTA's new album, The OF Tape Vol. 2 was released today.  I haven't listened to it yet, and am not sure if I will.  This video put a nice image of the boys in my mind, and I know listening to their music has huge potential to ruin that for me.

Little Joy

Summer's definitely on its way in Brandon Manitoba. I refuse to believe that we are going to get more snow. Refuse. Little Joy reminds me of summer and cruising around Brandon on bikes with shorts and sunglasses, drinking beer with pals and getting into a suffocatingly hot car and driving up to the lake, all the windows down and hair flyin errwhurr.

Little Joy is comprised of Rodrigo Amarante, every gal's Strokes crush Fabrizio Moretti (god dzamn), and the cutest lil lady, Binki Shapiro. Their self titled album is the most pleasant, adorable and easy listening music I've heard in a long time. It was released in 2008 and unfortunately there's been no word on anything new coming up from the trio. But every spring I fall back into a "Little Joy Hole" and it gets me excited for the months to come.

One of my favorite things, maybe in the whole world, is listening to "The Next Time Around" with Katy, and laughing my ass off when she sings Binki's Portuguese part, hitting maybe two words correctly.

There's a couple of really great live performances of "The Next Time Around" but this video is too perfect for the song and how it makes me feel.

Viva Verão!

dont read this.

In my Study of Myth class last Friday, it was so nice out (+20!) that we had our class outside in the courtyard. It was amazing. I've been thinking a lot about the actual class and the conversations we had in it. It's a seminar class so there are a lot of discussions. Although I'm still mad at that class for tricking me (it's not just reading fun myths, it's studying the theorists that studied myth) I'm glad that I'm at least learning interesting things. Anyway, we were talking about Carl Jung and his ideas surrounding Myth. My professor explained that the personality traits we detest the most in others, we can find in ourselves, but deep in our unconscious. I tried to think about my 'worst person ever' what their traits are and if I can see those in myself. I think I met my 'worst person ever' at the Garrick's Head Pub in Victoria just over a week ago. She really, really sucked. It's that person that cannot pick up on social cues and talks constantly about whatever is on their mind with no regards for whether the people being subjected to these brain farts gives a shit about what they're saying. The worst, right? I don't care that you're lying about being married, I didn't ask you to tell me all about it. Shit, I didn't even ask you to sit down with us.

Anyway, I've given it some thought and can actually recall myself giving information about myself without being prompted. I'm not clueless, I'm not a dick about it, but looking back I've actually done this. And I'm mortified. But then upon further self exploring into my unconscious (yeah right) I had another realization. I'm completely alone 90% of the time. So fuck all of you friends that have stranded me here in Brandon. Just jokes! I've actually been way too busy with school to even hang out with my friends that I do have here. (Sorry Meghoo!) But some days I go to school and don't actually speak any words for hours. Some days I don't actually utter a word until late afternoon. Isn't that crazy? So here I am again, talking about whatever is on my mind with no regards for whether the people being subjected to these brain farts gives a shit about what I'm saying. My worst nightmare. But it's my blog so I'm allowed, that's what they're for. On second thought, it's probably the fact that I have been hanging out with myself too much that made me start a blog at all.

What this post all boils down to, is that I cannot wait for school to be done for the summer, so that I can hang out with friends! Go to Winnipeg to visit Katy and Danny, have Sara and Rina come home, have Stacy move here (eh? eh?) hang out more with Meghan and Rob and others, and have normal conversations with people, trade ideas and thoughts so I'm not that freak at work telling the girl who likes horses too much things about me that for sure she doesn't care about. So just wait for summer, friends, Annoy-ison is waiting for you!

60 Seconds Wasted

Who else thinks that "60 Seconds Left" on the Pitchfork website blows?

In this little video segment that Pitchfork has, they take several bands and capture them doing this n that in 60 seconds. And it's SO BORING! Who cares if some twit with a nice video camera gets to hang out with musicians to make "artistic" minute long snooze-fests? I don't. Artists that I love and am genuinely intrigued by are boring me!

Wanna watch St. Vincent string a guitar? Nah, she's got tons of other pretty videos if I feel like girl crushing.  Plus I can't watch that dude do yoga in the background for more than 4 seconds.
Wanna watch Tyler the Creator barf on the cement? Absolutely not.
Wanna watch my beloved George Lewis Jr. of Twin Shadow make out with some chick? No! He's gay! And it was too intimate in a loving and non-porny way that unfortunately made me feel uncomfortable.
Here's a good one, lets watch Cults take a fuckin nap.
I watched more of these than I had wanted to, to write this post. The only one that I found to be entertaining was of Warpaint, because they were actually having a fun old-school jam singalong and not pretending to be artistic by crappily running down the street with some camera dude (italicized because I'm saying it with disgust) chasing her like the one featuring Zola Jesus. Which I will not show because it is too boring.
Come on, Pitchfork, these videos are not interesting or artistic.  Merely having footage of musicians is not enough to earn my (and hopefully others) 'spect.  Don't waste or abuse your capability to hang out with musicians on this shit, and don't waste 60 seconds of my time once a week.  AKAY?

Oblivion

I previously wrote about how I have a hard time with Grimes... well now I only have a great time with Grimes, I can't stop listening to her new album! Shits dancey! Her brand new video was released today for "Oblivion" and I think its friggen amazing, and not just cause I'm a new found fan. The concept, the filming and most of all the colors all blow ma mind. Enjoy!
