Summa Concert Review

Today is a sad day. The realization that all of my exciting summer concerts are over has sunk in. However, I have seen so many good shows! Especially last night:

Twin Shadow

This. Was. The. Best. Show. Ever. I was surrounded by a bunch of my favorite people, and the music was fucking awesome. Poolside opened up, and were the perfect opener. Their second song was a cover of Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon,' and although not many people should be doing Neil covers, they made it so "poolside" and awesome.

I have never been so star struck in my entire life as I was seeing George Lewis Jr. hanging all cool off the Pyramids bar. He even smiled at me! They opened with "Golden Light" and it sounded amazing.. they even had the distorted "haow haow haow haow" backup vocals. I've heard a few live performances by Twin Shadow and I expected their sound to be a lot different from the albums but they sounded even more colorful than their recordings. They played a perfect amount off each album, and ended the show with my favoritest Twin Shaddy song, "Forget." One of the coolest parts is that the band just hung around The Pyramid like it ain't no thang for a band to hang out with all their adoring fans. When Thomas and I went to look at merch and stare longingly at George he was super friendly and asked to take our picture!! Based on the amazing friends I was with, the small venue, the amazing sound, song choices, opening band and awesomeness of the band, this is by far one of the top 5 shows I've ever seen.

Beirut

Burton Cummings was hot. Really hot. Like disgusting hot. Walking up the several flights of stairs to the second balcony in the Burton Cummings Theater Rina and I began to feel the heat a-risin'. I totally would have given Burt a handy just for a god damned breeze but no such luck. Ahh well, it was nice to be in BCT again, I hadn't been in that beautiful beautiful theater since I saw The Music play there when I was 17 or 18. This was a super chill night, just sittin in a chair and watching the band. The 6 piece sounded amazing and I was shocked that I knew every single song give or take one or two, and each song was one I absolutely wanted to hear. They even played 'My Night With The Prostitute From Marsielle' off of their Realpeople Holland album, which I didn't expect at all since it was more of electronic-y album than all his other stuff. They did a three song encore that ended with Gulag Orkestar, the song that made the entire show feel complete! This was an amazing, amazing show.

Full Flex Tour

Grimes' Visions is easily one of my favorite albums of 2012, so when Jolene bribed me into going to this day-time all-ages dub-step weirdo-rave I was pretty stoked, based solely on Grimes. I ended up having an amazing time with her and Rose. Grimes was so freaking good/cute and had the coolest dancers. Two shirtless dudes with shades and golden water guns stood on either side of her the entire time, occasionally spraying the crowd which felt oh-so-good cause it was haaaaat out. There were also four chicks dressed as dragon-y fairies crawlin' around on the stage. Her set wasn't super long but it was friggen awesome, and she had the help of awesome DJ, Blood Diamonds.  His appearance was shocking, I didn't expect a platinum blonde hipster tubb-o in a cape but that's what's going on with that guy.  Every time I hear about him though I think back to a Pitchfork interview that stuck with me.  He was quoted as saying he got into making original music because "Around 2007, I picked up some DJ equipment and fell into the hell vortex of DJing these fucking shitty art school parties with people wearing jungle spandex and Indian headdresses being like: 'Play some Girl Talk.' I was so fucking over it, man."

Diplo was fun too, he was super into the crowd and came out onto it on a large man sized hampster ball. Skrillex was the shittiest part of the day music wise, but was also right around the same time when we met two sweet angels named Mitch and Arlin, brothers that were from Brandon and knew Rose. We ended up hanging out with them all night, went out afterwards where they bought us drinks all night and then they put us up in Arlin's house, gave us their beds, weren't creeps in the least and took us out for breakfast to top it all off. Best new friend experience errrrer! And because I was in the company of one of my best friends, Jolene, freshly picked up from the airport, with Rose who's always super fun, got to see Grimes and was at an all-day event with cool new friends, this was a fucking awesome day.

The Antlers

After a delicious Kyle made, almost vegan dinner, crazy ass hospitality, and way too much weed, Kyle Rina and I walked downtown to go see The Antlers.  This show was immaculate.  I cannot belieeeeeeve that Peter Silberman's voice is so perfect live.  Just like Twin Shadow, The Pyramid was the perfect venue for them.  The only downers about this show was that the music was so beautifully lullaby-ish that we were way too sleepy to do anything afterwards; and the gross lesbian couple (gross because of behavior not sexuality) in front of us that were making out the entire time and were knuckles deep in places I didn't care to look.
